  • Ortho/Sports Massage

WHAT IT IS: Ortho/Sports Massage is a combination of Orthopedic Massage, Sports Massage, and Muscle Energy Techniques used in tandem to address soft-tissue pain and injuries sustained by athletes and non-athletes alike. Sports Massage is more detailed with pre-event, post-event, and recovery phases, but Monica's interest in working with athletes is primary in the recovery of injuries.

BENEFITS: Monica's use of Ortho/Sports Massage addresses post-event recovery as well as pain and dysfunction from injuries. Reduction of pain, greater range of motion, and increased functionality are the goals.

APPROACH: The client can arrive wearing loose, comfortable clothing, as the area being worked will need to be accessed and often the therapy requires work in areas other than the place of pain. For this reason, the client can also disrobe to a level comfortable to his/her and lay on the massage table between sheets.

PRESSURE AND PACE: Pressure is firm but gentle, sometimes uncomfortable, never painful. Monica usually combines Myofascial Release and Trigger Point Therapy with Ortho/Sports Massage, and often incorporates movement to effect the greatest amount of change in the tissue and functionality.

OIL: Typically, very little to no lubricant is used for this rehabilitative therapy. However, at times Monica uses a very small amount of Cryoderm's Myofascial Cream or a couple drops of Jojoba lubricant, as this can be very helpful with the treatment.

DURATION: Most of Monica's manual therapy treatments combine many different modalities to have what she can offer as the best outcome she knows how to facilitate. This is especially true with the combined efforts of Myofascial Release and Trigger Point Therapy with Ortho/Sports Massage. That is to say that a client can request one particular manual therapy modality to be used, which Monica can and will do, but she finds a combination is, in general, more effective. Manual Therapy treatments are 30, 60, or 80 minutes long. The 60 minute is the most common for a more complete treatment; 30 minutes can be enough to address a specific area, and 80 minutes is the most thorough.

FREQUENCY: For addressing specific injuries, Monica recommends 3 treatments within 3 weeks or less. Usually within that time the client either notices a shift, or not. At that point they can make a more educated decision with how to proceed given how their bodies have responded. Some people combine Manual Therapy treatments with other professional therapies such as physical therapy or chiropractic; clients usually experience this combination very helpful.
